DEMOCRACY
We know that to constitute a state, we need four elements: territory, population, government, and sovereignty. Among these, government is a very important and essential element, because without government a state can not be constituted. And Governments can be different forms, such as parliamentary form of government, presidential form of government, unitary, or federal form of government, and they can also be dictatorship or monarchy. Among all these forms, one of the most important is the democratic form of Government.
Define democracy:-
The general meaning of the term democracy is a government of the people, made by the people of the country themself.
The word democracy comes from two Greek words "demos", meaning people, and "kratos" meaning power; so democracy can be thought of as "power of the people".
"Democracy is that form of Government in which the government elects by the people, either directly by the people or indirectly through their representatives." In this form of Government peoples power is supreme means - all the powers vested to the people. And citizens have the right to participate in decision making process and law making process of the government. and government always works for welfare of the people.
Democratic governments are at work in many countries of Asia, Afrika, Europe and America. but all democratic country are indirect or Representative democratic Governments. Direct Democracy is at work in only some state like Switzerland and some of the units of America and Australian federation.
Where did democracy come from?
The word was first used in ancient Athens, which is considered the birthplace of democracy. It's a combination of two Greek words: demos, a citizen of a city-state, and kratos, meaning 'power' or 'rule'.
Modern democracies took shape over many centuries. Citizens came together and worked towards a fairer society. They often had to fight to have their voices heard. This story of democracy continues today – most of the world's democracies are less than 100 years old.
